Valenciennes (September 21 at October 31, 2002)

The "Journées du patrimoine", were the occasion to discover the superb collection Louis Serbat : "Laces and curiosities of Louis Serbat's collection ". Mr. Louis Serbat bequeathed this collection to the Library of Valenciennes in 1965.

On September 21, Mrs Marie-Pierre Dion, Conservative General of the Multi-media library, presented to us the collection, composed of lace of Valenciennes, but also of some superb Chantilly, Lille, Malines. Mr. Patrick Roussiès, Deputy City council man Culture Inheritance Tourism and Vice president of the Culture of Valenciennes Metropolis presented the project of museum of the Craft industry which will be in few time with the "Mount of Piety" of Valenciennes.

Laces are exposed in splendid "Salle des Jésuites" (XVIIIème) of the Library, rare building of this type in to be preserved France. I highly advise you to visit it, if you have the possibility. It finishes on October 31, 2002.
After this date, you will be able to continue to visit "La salle des Jésuites". You will find there a multitude of old books, whose celebrates it "Cantilène de Sainte Eulalie". The "Cantilène de Sainte Eulalie" is the oldest known text written in French language.
